Comparison Paper

Q Students will write a paper comparing the ways 2 or more of the authors portray life or work across social sectors. This paper will comprise not less than 3 pages of text, be in academic style and format, be appropriately cited and referenced, and be ON TOPIC. Topic ideas will be provided later. This is NOT a research paper--it is you and the texts--so you should only have to cite the texts themselves. Possible themes include (but you are NOT limited to these--if you see another you like that has to do with life/work, go for it!): Roles of women (wife/mother/worker/etc.) [what is a "good girl"?] Social class (think about Gatsby, Raisin in the Sun, Garcia Girls in particular) Role of (or difficulties for) minorities in society/life (remember Jimmy Gatz is a minority in Gatsby) Unfulfilling work vs. one's dreams Money causing conflict (social or personal) Obstacles to "the American Dream" The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and again, if you see something else . . . The grass is always greener on the other side simply explains how people are rarely satisfied with what they have and usually bear the notion that other people or other areas are better than theirs. In this comparison paper, I am going to compare how Julia Alvarez and Lorraine Hansberry portray life and work in relation to the saying ‘the grass is always greener on the other side’. The two writers both touch on the saying in their books; How the Garcia Girls lost their accents by Julia Alvarez and A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry.
